Set up Facebook Messenger Ads and Talk Your Customers into a Sale

If you think shopping stops at social media, do we have a treat for you. Early last year, Facebook began a slow rollout of its Messenger Ads — ads shown to Facebook users on the chat app's Home tab.

Messenger Ads are particularly exciting because it offers brands a more engaging means of reaching the 1.3 billion people around the world who already use chat to interact and conduct commerce with businesses they love. Messenger Ads gives Facebook users the opportunity to discover the same delightful experiences directly from the Home tab. Here's a look from a user's perspective:

When a viewer taps on your ad, they are directed to a destination you set at ad creation. If your destination is a website, it will open in the Messenger browser:

Set up Messenger ads
Follow these steps to launch your ad in Messenger:
1. Go to Ad Creation and select your objective from the following options:
Traffic, Conversions, App Install, Reach, Messages, and Brand Awareness
2. After choosing your objective, click Continue.
3. Next, complete the Destination section to determine where a viewer ends up after they click on your ad. You have the following options:
  • Website URL opens your website in a Messenger window.
  • App opens your app.
  • Messenger opens a Messenger conversation. To set up this option, select Set Up Messenger Content
4. Select Automatic Placements or Edit Placements if needed. Messenger is not currently available as a standalone placement.
If you choose to edit, please keep in mind that Messenger Ads are only available when you run ads across multiple placements. Additionally, a campaign must also include Facebook.

Tip: The easiest way to take advantage of the Messenger placement is through Automatic Placements. Automatic Placements are designed to deliver ad impressions where they are most likely to drive campaign results at the lowest possible cost.

5. Edit your Audience, Budget and Schedule and click Next.

Select your format. Compatible formats are Single image or Carousel. The recommended specs are the same as News Feed (see below). You can neither crop nor upload unique creatives for ads in Messenger.

  • Ad specs for single: Recommended image size: 1,200 x 628 pixels; Image ratio: 1.9:1
  • Ad specs for carousel: Recommended image size: 600 x 600 pixels; Image ratio: 1:1 
6. Click Done to finish editing your ad.
7. Click Place Order to publish your ad.
